You followed a few shows, commuted with headphones, then forgot about it. Months later Settings says iPhone Storage Almost Full. Photos looks fine. Safari Downloads is empty. The hog is a quiet row labeled Podcasts.
That is because downloaded episodes are not in Photos. They live inside Apple Podcasts as Documents & Data. Following a show auto-downloads the newest episode. Video episodes are worse. Offloading the app does nothing useful. The files leave when you tap Remove Download.
This is the map: see the size, clear Library → Downloaded, turn off auto-download, and check Spotify or Overcast if you do not use Apple’s app.
See How Much Podcasts Is Using
Start with the meter, not the app.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Wait for the list to finish loading.
- Tap Podcasts.
You will see two numbers. App Size is the Podcasts binary. Documents & Data is the audio and video sitting on the phone. That second number is the one you can shrink without deleting the app.
Quick check: if Podcasts is several gigabytes and you do not remember downloading anything, auto-download has been catching every new episode of every show you follow. That is the usual pile, not a corrupt library.
Delete Downloads in Apple Podcasts
Apple keeps one list for everything on the device: Library → Downloaded. Removing a download deletes the file. It does not unfollow the show, and it does not send the episode to Photos or Files Recently Deleted.
Remove one episode
- Open the Podcasts app.
- Tap Library, then Downloaded.
- Tap the show, then touch and hold the episode.
- Tap Remove Download.
Swipe left on an episode → Remove Download works the same. The show stays in your library. You can stream it later.
Remove every download for one show
- Library → Downloaded.
- Touch and hold the show.
- Tap Remove Downloads.
Remove all downloads
- Library → Downloaded.
- Tap More (…).
- Tap Remove All Downloads.
- Confirm.
Wait a minute, then reopen Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The Podcasts Documents & Data bar should drop. If it does not, you cleared Apple Podcasts and the gigabytes are in another listener app.
Remove Download
Deletes the local file. The episode stays in the catalog. You can stream it or download it again.
Useful when you finished last month’s backlog and want the gigabytes today.
Unfollow a show
Stops new episodes from landing, if auto-download is on. Existing downloads stay until you remove them.
Useful so the pile does not refill after you clean it.
Stop Auto-Download So They Do Not Come Back
Apple’s default: when you follow a show, the newest episode downloads. That is how a commute habit becomes 8 GB of unplayed audio.
- Open Settings → Apps → Podcasts (on older iOS: Settings → Podcasts).
- Under Automatic Downloads, tap Automatically Download.
- Choose Off, or limit it to a small number of recent episodes (or a short time window).
Leave Remove Played Downloads on. Apple then deletes the file about 24 hours after you finish an episode. Turn that switch off only if you re-listen from the local copy on purpose.
One show at a time: open the show in Podcasts, tap the check mark at the top, then Turn Off Automatic Downloads.
Video podcasts: Settings → Apps → Podcasts → Automatic Downloads. If Download Video is on, one weekly show can outweigh a month of audio. Stream video on Wi-Fi, or turn Download Video off.
Saved vs Downloaded
Two different buttons. Mixing them up is why people think they “deleted” a show and the meter never moved.
Save
A bookmark. The episode stays in Saved. It does not have to sit on disk.
Removing a save does not free storage if a download also exists.
Download
The actual file. Library → Downloaded is the list that costs gigabytes.
Remove Download is the storage reclaim. Save can stay.
Offload Podcasts vs Delete the Downloads
Same trap as Safari and WhatsApp. Offload strips the app binary and keeps Documents & Data — see offload vs delete. Your episodes are Documents & Data.
Offload App
Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Podcasts → Offload App.
Frees a small App Size number. Downloads stay. The next tap reinstalls the app on top of the same pile.
Remove All Downloads
Podcasts → Library → Downloaded → More → Remove All Downloads.
Keeps the app. Deletes the audio. This is the storage reclaim if you still listen.
Delete App removes both the binary and the files. Use that only if you are done with Apple Podcasts. If you listen in Spotify or Overcast, you still have a second pile in those apps.
Spotify, Overcast, and Other Apps
Apple Podcasts is the default row. It is not the only one.
- Spotify — Your Library → Downloads (or the app’s Storage / Downloads settings). Remove episodes or shows there. Spotify Documents & Data in iPhone Storage is a separate bar.
- Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castro, YouTube — each has its own Downloads or Offline screen. Clearing Apple Podcasts does not touch them.
- Files — if you saved an MP3 or a show ZIP with Safari, that copy is in Downloads, not Podcasts. Use the Safari downloads guide.
Sort iPhone Storage by size. Any listener app with a fat Documents & Data number is a download pile, even if the name is not Podcasts.
