Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage, scroll past Photos and Messages, and Voice Memos is often sitting there with a number nobody expected: 3 GB, 7 GB, sometimes more than Safari. The app icon is tiny. The recordings are not.
This is not iMessage voice messages and it is not WhatsApp voice notes. Those live inside chats. Apple Voice Memos is its own library — lectures, meetings, parking-spot notes, Apple Watch clips — and iOS will keep every one forever unless you delete it.
Two traps before you start: Lossless is often on by default (about 3.5× the size of Compressed), and deleting a memo does not free space until you empty Recently Deleted. Get those wrong and you spend an hour on a number that does not move.
See the Meter First
Guessing which recordings are the hog wastes the afternoon. Two screens tell you.
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Voice Memos. Write down Documents & Data. That is the recordings, not the app.
- Open the Voice Memos app (Utilities folder, or Spotlight “Voice Memos”). The list shows duration on every row. An hour-long lecture is the file you want. A 12-second reminder is not.
If Voice Memos is small here but storage is still full, the pile is somewhere else — usually Photos, Messages, or whatever iOS listed at the top. Do not delete keepers to chase a 200 MB app.
Lossless Is Why a “Few Notes” Become Gigabytes
Voice Memos has two quality modes. A lot of iPhones ship with the expensive one.
Compressed
Smaller files. Fine for speech — meetings, lectures, reminders, the “where did I park” clip. Roughly one-third the size of Lossless in a side-by-side minute.
This is the setting most people actually want.
Lossless
Keeps every sample. About 3.5× larger. Useful if you are recording music or something you will edit later. Overkill for a voice in a car.
There is no “compress all” for memos you already made. Switching the setting only changes new recordings.
Check it: Settings → Apps → Voice Memos → Audio Quality (on older iOS: Settings → Voice Memos). If it says Lossless, switch to Compressed now. Then go delete the long ones you do not need. You cannot convert the old files in-app; export and recompress only if a specific recording is both huge and precious.
Rule of thumb: sort by length, not by date. Three forgotten two-hour lectures outweigh a year of 20-second notes. Delete those first. Then flip the quality switch so the next lecture does not land as Lossless again.
Delete the Big Recordings
Apple’s path is the Voice Memos app. Settings → iPhone Storage → Voice Memos does not give you a biggest-first file list the way Messages does.
- Open Voice Memos.
- Tap Edit above the list (or tap one recording, then the trash icon).
- Select the long, old, or duplicate takes. Folders help if you already grouped classes or trips — open the folder, then Edit.
- Tap the trash icon. The files move to Recently Deleted. They are not gone yet.
Need to keep the words but not the audio? On iOS 18 and later, many recordings have an on-device transcript. Open the memo, copy the text, then delete the file. Call recordings from iOS 18.1+ live in Notes, not here — do not hunt those in Voice Memos.
If you shared a memo to Files or Mail, that can be a second copy. The Files copy does not disappear when you trash the Voice Memos row. Check Downloads / On My iPhone if the storage number barely moved after this section.
Empty Recently Deleted or the Space Stays
Same trap as Photos. Default keep is 30 days. Until that folder is empty, Documents & Data does not drop.
- In Voice Memos, tap the back chevron at the top left if you are inside a folder, until you see the folder list.
- Open Recently Deleted.
- Tap Edit, then Delete All. Or open one row and tap Delete.
Want a shorter window? Settings → Apps → Voice Memos → Clear Deleted — Immediately, After 1 Day, After 7 Days, After 30 Days. Immediately is fine if you only delete on purpose. If the iPhone storage number still looks wrong after a minute, restart once; the meter lags. If Photos was the other hog you already cleaned, Recently Deleted there is a separate album.
iCloud Syncs the Delete — Check Before You Wipe a Keeper
If Voice Memos is turned on in iCloud, the library is shared. Delete on the iPhone and the same file leaves the Mac and iPad.
Settings → your name → iCloud → Saved to iCloud (or See All) → Voice Memos. On = one library. Off = this phone only.
That also means a fat Voice Memos library can be part of why iCloud storage is full. Cleaning the phone and leaving an old iCloud copy is two different meters. If you still want a recording, share it to Files or a computer before you empty Recently Deleted.
Do Not Offload Voice Memos Hoping the Files Leave
Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Voice Memos offers Offload App and Delete App. They are not interchangeable.
Offload App
Removes the app binary. Keeps Documents & Data. The recordings stay. Reinstalling puts the icon back on top of the same pile. Useful only if you need a few megabytes and you are not ready to touch memos.
Delete App
Removes the app and the local recordings. If iCloud Voice Memos is on, other devices still have the files. If it is off, this is a real delete — recover from Recently Deleted only if you reinstall in time and the folder is still there.
Offload is the move people try first. The Voice Memos line in iPhone Storage barely moves. That is expected.
What iOS Will Not Do
Built into iOS
Edit → multi-select in Voice Memos deletes many recordings at once.
Recently Deleted plus Clear Deleted gives you a 30-day (or shorter) undo.
Audio Quality → Compressed stops the next lecture from landing as Lossless.
Not built into iOS
No biggest-first list under iPhone Storage → Voice Memos, unlike Messages attachments.
No “compress existing memos.” The quality switch is future-only.
Offload does not purge recordings. People try it first. The number does not move.
A two-hour Lossless memo you want to keep is still cheaper as a compressed export than as the original. After the junk is gone, the rest of a full iPhone is usually Photos — duplicates, screenshots, and videos you can shrink instead of delete.
Where Cleanup My Phone Helps

Why are Voice Memos taking so much storage?
Long recordings plus Lossless quality. A one-hour lecture in Lossless can be hundreds of megabytes, and Recently Deleted keeps deleted files for 30 days unless you empty it.
Does deleting a Voice Memo free space immediately?
