How to Delete WhatsApp Media on iPhone (and Why It Fills Storage Twice)

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage, scroll to WhatsApp, and the number is often ugly: 6 GB, 14 GB, sometimes more than Photos. Deleting a hundred pictures from Recents does not move it. That is not a bug. WhatsApp keeps its own library, and a lot of that library is also sitting in Photos.

This is not the same problem as old iMessage attachments. Apple Messages has Review Large Attachments. WhatsApp has Manage storage. They do not see each other. Clean one and the other still owns the bytes.

WhatsApp says the quiet part in its own help: delete an item and it leaves WhatsApp media, but copies may still be saved on the device. One forwarded video can cost you twice. Until both copies are gone, the storage meter barely moves.

Two Places, One Video

A file WhatsApp receives can live in three spots. You only notice two of them.

Guessing which chat is the hog wastes the afternoon. Two screens tell you.

1. Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WhatsApp. Write down Documents & Data. That is the in-app pile.
2. Open WhatsApp → Settings (bottom-right) → Storage and data → Manage storage.
3. The top of that screen is WhatsApp’s own total. Under it, chats and channels are ranked by size.

The largest rows are almost always a family group, a work group, or a chat that auto-downloaded every video. Voice notes and PDFs hide in quieter 1:1 threads. If WhatsApp is small here but Photos is huge, the copies already left the app — skip to the Camera Roll section.

Delete the Big Files Inside WhatsApp First

Manage storage is the only built-in way to strip media and keep the conversation. You are not deleting the chat. You are deleting files WhatsApp already downloaded.

1. In Manage storage, open the biggest chat.
2. Tap Select (or tap and hold a file), mark the videos and other large items. Use Select all only if you mean it — starred items get a second prompt so you can keep those.
3. Delete. The message stays in the thread as a placeholder. You can re-download later from the sender if the media is still on their side.
4. Repeat for the next two or three chats. That is usually most of the gigabytes.

You can do the same from inside a chat: tap the name at the top → Manage storage. WhatsApp also lets you search the chat list for Photos, Videos, or Documents and delete from there. If a delete prompt offers to remove copies from the device gallery, take it. That is the second copy.

To wipe media from a chat without picking files one by one: tap and hold the chat → Clear chat → Clear all media, then check Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents, and Audio as you want. The chat stays in the list. You are not removed from a group.

Then Delete the Photos Copies

If Save to Camera Roll was ever on, Manage storage is only half the job. The same clips are in Recents, mixed with real photos, and they still count after WhatsApp forgets them.

1. Open Photos → Recents.
2. Jump to months when a group was noisy. Forwarded videos and status-style clips are obvious in the grid.
3. Tap Select and drag across the junk. Leave the photos you actually took.
4. Check the Screenshots album for chat captures you will never open again.
5. Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Select → Delete All. Until that album is empty, the space does not come back.

Apple’s Duplicates album sometimes catches an exact WhatsApp-plus-Camera-Roll pair. It misses near-copies and the forwarded clip you also screenshotted. Treat those as similar shots, not as a special WhatsApp format.

Stop the Next Wave

Cleaning once and leaving the defaults on is how the number returns in a month.

1. WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → turn Save to Camera Roll off. New incoming media stays in WhatsApp unless you save it on purpose.
2. For a loud group, open the chat, tap the name, set Save to Camera Roll to Never. Default / Always / Never is per chat and overrides the global switch.
3. WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. Set Videos and Documents to Never (or Wi-Fi only if you really want them). Keep Photos on Wi-Fi if you still want stills to land without tapping.

Off is not the same as deleted. These switches stop new files. They do not touch what is already on the phone. Save a photo later with the share sheet when you actually want it in Photos.

Do Not Offload WhatsApp Hoping the Videos Leave

Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WhatsApp offers Offload App and Delete App. They are not interchangeable.

If iCloud is also full, a fat WhatsApp chat backup can be part of that bill. That is a different meter than iPhone storage; the iCloud storage guide covers dead backups and the 30-day Recently Deleted trap.

What iOS and WhatsApp Will Not Do

A 4K clip you want to keep is still cheaper as a compressed file than as two originals. After the junk is gone, compress the keepers instead of deleting the one trip video you actually care about.
