You open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and Telegram is the bar that will not shrink. Photos looks fine. Messages looks fine. Telegram’s Documents & Data is still several gigabytes of cached photos, channel videos, and files you already scrolled past.
Clear Storage Usage inside Telegram, set Keep Media so the cache stops refilling forever, turn off Save Incoming Photos if Camera Roll is getting a second copy, and — only then — clean any Photos leftovers. Chats stay in the cloud. That is the whole job.
Telegram is excellent at keeping media ready offline. It is also excellent at filling the phone while the camera roll looks empty. Button labels can vary slightly by Telegram and iOS version; look for Data and Storage, Storage Usage, Clear Cache, Keep Media, Automatic Media Download, and Save Incoming Photos / Save to Photos.
Where Telegram media actually lives on iPhone
Most of the weight is not in Photos. It sits in Telegram’s sandbox under Documents & Data — the same bucket Netflix downloads, WhatsApp media, and Safari files use.
- App Size — the Telegram binary from the App Store. Usually modest next to a long-running cache.
- Documents & Data — cached photos, videos, files, stickers, voice notes, and other local copies. Often the large number.
- Photos — only if Save Incoming Photos (or a manual Save) wrote a second copy to Camera Roll. Clearing Telegram cache will not delete those Photos copies, and deleting Photos will not shrink Telegram’s sandbox.

Quick check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Telegram. If Documents & Data is the big line, open Telegram → Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage. Offloading the app will not free that number.
How to clear Telegram cache (stock Telegram, no third-party app)
Do this inside Telegram first. Clearing cache removes local copies. Your chats and the media on Telegram’s servers stay put; opening an old file later re-downloads it.
- Open Telegram.
- Tap Settings (gear, usually bottom right).
- Tap Data and Storage.
- Tap Storage Usage at the top. Wait a moment while Telegram totals the cache.
- Review the breakdown (Photos, Videos, Files, Music, Voices, and similar categories when shown).
- Tap Clear Cache / Clear Entire Cache, or clear only the heavy types (often Videos and Files first).
- Confirm. Recheck Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Telegram after a minute if Documents & Data looks stale.
One heavy chat: Open the chat or channel → tap the name at the top → look for Clear Cache / storage controls for that conversation when you only want to shrink one group without wiping everything.
Set Keep Media so the cache does not refill overnight
Clearing once without a limit is how Telegram returns to “Storage Almost Full” after a busy week of channels.
- Still in Storage Usage, find Keep Media.
- Change it from Forever (or a long window) to 3 days, 1 week, or 1 month — pick the shortest span you can live with.
- Telegram removes unused local media older than that window. The cloud copy remains; it reappears when you open it again.
Qualitative pattern (not a measured study): people who leave Keep Media on Forever after clearing usually see Documents & Data climb again as auto-downloaded channel video returns. A short Keep Media window is the prevention step that matches the clear.
Turn down Automatic Media Download
- Settings → Data and Storage → Automatic Media Download.
- For Using Cellular and Using Wi-Fi, turn off (or tighten) Photos, Videos, Files, and Stories / voice as needed.
- Media you actually want still downloads when you tap it — it just stops filling the phone in the background.
Stop Telegram from saving a second copy to Photos
If Save Incoming Photos (or Save to Photos) was on, you can clear Telegram and still have the same images sitting in Camera Roll.
- Telegram → Settings → Data and Storage.
- Find Save Incoming Photos / Save to Photos and turn it off for private chats, groups, and channels (labels vary).
- In Apple Photos, search or browse for Telegram-saved shots you do not need; delete them.
- Empty Recently Deleted or the Photos bar will barely move for up to 30 days.
Clear Telegram cache
Frees Documents & Data. Chats stay. Best first move when iPhone Storage shows Telegram huge.
Delete Photos copies
Frees the Camera Roll second copy only. Does not shrink Telegram’s sandbox. Empty Recently Deleted after.
Offload Telegram
Removes App Size only. Documents & Data stays. Poor choice when cache is the problem. See offload vs delete.
Delete App
Wipes the binary and the sandbox. Account and chats remain in the cloud. Use only after you accept re-downloading media you still want offline.
What will not free Telegram storage
- Emptying Photos Recently Deleted alone — different app. Use it for Camera Roll copies; clear Telegram Storage Usage for Documents & Data.
- Clearing Safari cache — does not touch Telegram’s sandbox. Clear cache on iPhone is still useful elsewhere.
- Deleting messages without clearing cache — local media can remain until Storage Usage is cleared.
- Offloading Telegram when Documents & Data is the large number.
If the phone is still full after messaging apps, next stops are usually Photos junk and large Camera videos: find large videos, delete screenshots, and what’s taking up space.
