You deleted 800 photos. Settings still says Storage Almost Full. That is not a bug. Swipe-delete on iPhone is a move, not an erase.
Apple parks the items in Recently Deleted for 30 days. They still count toward iPhone storage — and toward iCloud storage if iCloud Photos is on. The meter moves when you empty that album, or when the timer ends. Waiting a month is the default. Emptying it is the afternoon you actually wanted.
There is also no one trash can. Photos, Files, Notes, Mail, and Voice Memos each keep their own bin. Empty Photos and your Safari PDFs still sit in Files. This is the map.
Why “Delete” Does Not Free Space Yet
Apple’s own Photos guide: deleted photos and videos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days before they are permanently removed from this iPhone, iCloud, and other devices on the same Apple Account. Files, Notes, and Voice Memos use the same 30-day idea in their own folders.
Swipe-delete / Delete
Moves the item to that app’s Recently Deleted (or Mail Trash). A days-left badge starts. The bytes stay. You can Recover.
Useful when you might have tapped the wrong burst.
Empty Recently Deleted
Permanently removes the items now. Storage can drop after iOS recalculates. Recover is gone. If iCloud Photos is on, it is gone on every device.
Useful when you meant it and you need the gigabytes today.
Rule of thumb: if you just cleaned Photos and the Photos bar in Settings → General → iPhone Storage did not drop, open Recently Deleted before you hunt System Data. The gray bar is a different problem. The 30-day album is the usual one.
Find Recently Deleted in Photos (iOS 18 and iOS 26)
The Photos tabs changed. The album is still there. It is just lower than people look.
- Open Photos.
- Scroll to the bottom of the library until you see Utilities. On iOS 26, tap Collections first, then scroll to Utilities.
- Tap Recently Deleted. Tap View Album if iOS asks. Unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Each item shows days left. That is the 30-day clock, not a storage discount.
If Utilities is missing: scroll to the very bottom → Customize & Reorder → turn Utilities (or Others on some builds) back on. Hidden is a different locked album. Do not confuse the two. Hidden photos still count as photos; Recently Deleted is the trash.
On older iOS the same album is Photos → Albums → Utilities → Recently Deleted.
Empty Photos Recently Deleted
This is the step that actually returns the space from a photo cleanup.
- Inside Recently Deleted, tap Select (top right).
- Tap Delete All (bottom left). Or tap individual items, then Delete.
- Confirm. With iCloud Photos on, the button is usually Delete from All Devices. With iCloud Photos off, it is Delete from this iPhone.
That confirm is the honest warning. iCloud Photos is one library. Emptying Recently Deleted on this phone empties it everywhere on the account. If you might want a shot back, Recover it first, or leave the 30-day clock alone.
Then wait a minute and reopen Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The Photos bar should drop. If it does not, you emptied the wrong bin, iCloud is still optimizing, or you deleted items that were already only in the cloud copy. See why storage stays full after deleting photos.
Empty Files Recently Deleted (Downloads, PDFs, On My iPhone)
Safari downloads, AirDrops, and “Save to Files” PDFs do not go to Photos. They go to the Files app. Deleting them there starts a separate 30-day clock.
- Open Files → Browse.
- Under Locations, tap Recently Deleted. If you do not see it, tap the sidebar or scroll the Locations list.
- Tap the More button (…) → Select → Delete All. Confirm.
Apple: files deleted from iCloud Drive or On My iPhone sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Emptying that folder deletes them immediately and they are not recoverable. Offloading Safari does nothing here. The files are not in the Safari binary.
The Other Bins People Miss
Emptying Photos and Files covers most of the gigabytes. These four still hide leftover days.
Notes
Notes → folder list → Recently Deleted → Edit → Delete All. 30 days. Attachments in notes count until this folder is empty.
Voice Memos. Open the app → Recently Deleted → Edit → Delete All. Offload does not remove recordings. Details in the Voice Memos guide.
Mail Trash
Mail → Mailboxes → Trash → Edit → Select All → Delete. iCloud Mail usually auto-empties after 30 days. Until then, large attachments still sit on the account.
WhatsApp / Messages. Chat apps have their own manage-storage screens. They are not Photos Recently Deleted. WhatsApp media and message attachments need those tools, then empty Photos if you also saved copies to the Camera Roll.
iPhone Storage vs iCloud Storage
Two meters. Recently Deleted can sit on both.
- iPhone storage (Settings → General → iPhone Storage). Local copies, including Recently Deleted photos that are still on the device.
- iCloud storage (Settings → [your name] → iCloud). If iCloud Photos is on, deleted items still count against the 5 GB (or paid) quota until Recently Deleted is empty.

Optimize iPhone Storage only evicts full-resolution originals you have not opened. It does not empty Recently Deleted. Hidden photos are still in the library. Screenshots you meant to dump still need a delete and this empty — the screenshots how-to ends on the same album.
