You open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and Chrome is the bar that will not budge. Photos is not the culprit this time. Chrome’s Documents & Data is holding cached images and files, site data, and downloads — often several gigabytes after months of browsing (qualitative reports from Chrome-on-iOS users; your number will differ).
Clear Cached Images and Files inside Chrome, clean Downloads, and only then decide whether Delete App is worth it. Offload will not shrink Documents & Data. That is the whole job.
Chrome’s iPhone menus shift by version. Treat the paths below as intent-based: look for More (…), History, Clear Browsing Data, Cached Images and Files, and Downloads. Clearing cache does not mean the same thing as Delete App.
Where Chrome storage actually lives on iPhone
Most of the weight is not in Photos. It sits in Chrome’s sandbox under Documents & Data — the same bucket CapCut drafts, Discord cache, and Netflix downloads use.
- App Size — the Chrome binary from the App Store. Usually modest next to long-running cache and downloads.
- Documents & Data — cached images and files, cookies/site data, offline pages, and files Chrome stored locally. Often the large number.
- Photos / Files — only media you explicitly saved out of Chrome. Clearing Chrome cache will not delete Camera Roll saves, and deleting Photos will not shrink Chrome’s sandbox.

Quick check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Chrome. If Documents & Data is the big line, clean inside Chrome first (Clear Browsing Data + Downloads). Offloading the app will not free that number.
What to keep before you clear
Do this before a deep clear or Delete App if anything still matters.
- Confirm you are signed into Chrome with the Google Account that holds your bookmarks and passwords (if you use sync).
- Save any open tabs or reading-list items you still need.
- Move important Chrome Downloads to Files, iCloud Drive, or a computer before deleting them in-app.
- Leave Saved Passwords unchecked in Clear Browsing Data unless you intend to remove saved logins.
Cache vs cookies vs Delete App: Cached Images and Files is meant for rebuildable temporary files. Cookies / Site Data signs you out of sites. Delete App wipes Chrome’s local sandbox. Sync first if you care about bookmarks and passwords.
How to free Chrome storage on iPhone (safe order)
Follow this order so you free space without wiping logins you meant to keep. Button names shift by Chrome build and iOS version.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Chrome. Note App Size vs Documents & Data.
- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap More (…) → History → Clear Browsing Data. (Alternate path: More → Settings → Privacy and security → Clear Browsing Data.)
- Pick a time range (Last hour through All time).
- Select Cached Images and Files. Optionally add Cookies, Site Data for a deeper reset. Leave Saved Passwords off unless you mean it.
- Tap Clear Browsing Data and confirm.
- Open More → Downloads and delete large files you no longer need. Check the Files app for leftover downloads too.
- Wait a minute, then recheck Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Chrome if Documents & Data still looks stale.
What Cached Images and Files removes: temporary page images, scripts, and other rebuildable junk Chrome can fetch again. Sites may load a bit slower the first time. Your bookmarks should still appear when sync is on.
If Clear Browsing Data is not enough
Some Chrome builds leave Documents & Data stubborn after cache + downloads. Then you choose between Offload and Delete.
Offload App
Removes App Size only. Documents & Data stays. Poor choice when cache and downloads are the problem. See offload vs delete.
Delete App
Wipes the binary and the sandbox — including local Chrome data that never synced. Reinstall from the App Store and sign in after.
- Confirm Google sync (or exported bookmarks) works on another device.
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Chrome.
- Choose Offload App only if you need a small App Size win and accept that Documents & Data will not shrink.
- Choose Delete App when Documents & Data is the large number and in-app cleanup is missing or ineffective.
- Reinstall Chrome and sign in. Restore synced bookmarks and passwords from your Google Account.
Chrome vs Safari: two different sandboxes
Clearing Safari does not shrink Chrome, and clearing Chrome does not shrink Safari. They are separate apps with separate Documents & Data.

What will not free Chrome storage
- Clearing Safari alone — different sandbox. Useful for Safari; useless for Chrome’s Documents & Data.
- Emptying Photos Recently Deleted alone — different app. Use it for Camera Roll; clean Chrome cache and Downloads for Documents & Data.
- Third-party “clear cache” apps that claim to wipe Chrome’s sandbox — iOS does not allow that. They cannot empty another app’s Documents & Data.
- Offloading Chrome when Documents & Data is the large number.
- Clearing only history — history is small; Cached Images and Files and Downloads are usually the weight.
If the phone is still full after Chrome shrinks, next stops are usually Photos junk and large Camera videos: find large videos, delete screenshots, and what’s taking up space.
