You open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and CapCut is the bar that will not move. Photos is not the villain this time. CapCut’s Documents & Data is holding unfinished drafts, a full in-app Trash, preview caches, and imported clips — sometimes tens of gigabytes after a month of editing (qualitative reports from CapCut users; your number will differ).
Export the projects you still care about, empty CapCut’s Trash, clear CapCut’s own cache, and only then decide whether Delete App is worth it. Offload will not shrink Documents & Data. That is the whole job.
CapCut’s iPhone menus shift by version. Treat the paths below as intent-based: look for Me / profile, the Settings gear, Clear cache, project Trash, and CapCut Space / cloud backup. Clearing cache does not mean the same thing as Delete App.
Where CapCut storage actually lives on iPhone
Most of the weight is not in Photos. It sits in CapCut’s sandbox under Documents & Data — the same bucket Discord cache, Telegram media, and Netflix downloads use.
- App Size — the CapCut binary from the App Store. Usually modest next to long-running drafts and cache.
- Documents & Data — local drafts, CapCut Trash, preview/render cache, downloaded effects/templates, and imported media copies. Often the large number.
- Photos — only exported videos you saved to Camera Roll. Clearing CapCut cache will not delete those Photos copies, and deleting Photos will not shrink CapCut’s sandbox.

Quick check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → CapCut. If Documents & Data is the big line, clean inside CapCut first (Trash + Clear cache). Offloading the app will not free that number.
Protect drafts before you free space
Do this before Clear cache or Delete App if any project still matters.
- Open each keeper draft and confirm it still plays.
- Export finished videos to Photos (or Files / a computer).
- If you use CapCut cloud / Space, upload keepers and reopen them on another device or after a fresh install to verify the backup — do not trust an upload spinner alone.
- Keep source clips in Photos or Files if the draft still points at them.
Clear cache vs Delete App: Clear cache is meant for temporary previews and downloads. Delete App wipes CapCut’s local sandbox, including drafts that never left the phone. Export first.
How to free CapCut storage on iPhone (safe order)
Follow this order so you free space without nuking work you meant to keep. Button names shift by CapCut build and iOS version.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → CapCut. Note App Size vs Documents & Data.
- Open the CapCut app.
- Delete finished or abandoned projects from your project list.
- Open CapCut’s in-app Trash (often near projects / drafts) and permanently delete what is there. This step is easy to miss — deleted projects can keep using storage until Trash is emptied.
- Tap Me (or your profile) → the Settings gear.
- Look for Clear cache (often under Feedback & about, or a Storage / Cache section). Tap and confirm.
- Wait a minute, then recheck Settings → General → iPhone Storage → CapCut if Documents & Data still looks stale.
What Clear cache removes: temporary previews, thumbnails, downloaded effects/templates CapCut can fetch again, and other rebuildable junk. Your remaining drafts should still appear. Previews may load slower the first time you reopen a project.
If Clear cache is missing or Documents & Data stays huge
Some CapCut builds bury cache controls, or Documents & Data stays stubborn after Trash + Clear cache. Then you choose between Offload and Delete.
Offload App
Removes App Size only. Documents & Data stays. Poor choice when drafts and cache are the problem. See offload vs delete.
Delete App
Wipes the binary and the sandbox — including local drafts that were never exported or verified in CapCut Space. Reinstall from the App Store and sign in after.
- Confirm exports and CapCut Space backups open somewhere else.
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage → CapCut.
- Choose Offload App only if you need a small App Size win and accept that Documents & Data will not shrink.
- Choose Delete App when Documents & Data is the large number and in-app cleanup is missing or ineffective.
- Reinstall CapCut and sign in. Restore drafts from CapCut Space if you backed them up.
Photos copies: only exported CapCut videos
CapCut does not replace Photos cleanup. If you exported many 4K cuts into Camera Roll, those live in Photos — separate from CapCut Documents & Data.
- In Apple Photos, find CapCut exports you do not need (or compress keepers instead of deleting).
- Delete the ones you are done with.
- Empty Recently Deleted or the Photos bar will barely move for up to 30 days.
Clear CapCut Trash + cache
Frees Documents & Data. Best first move when iPhone Storage shows CapCut huge.
Delete / compress Photos exports
Frees Camera Roll copies only. Does not shrink CapCut’s sandbox. See compress videos and large videos.
What will not free CapCut storage
- Clearing Safari alone — does not touch CapCut’s sandbox. Clear cache on iPhone is still useful elsewhere.
- Emptying Photos Recently Deleted alone — different app. Use it for exported videos; clean CapCut Trash + cache (or Delete App) for Documents & Data.
- Third-party “clear cache” apps that claim to wipe CapCut’s sandbox — iOS does not allow that. They cannot empty another app’s Documents & Data.
- Offloading CapCut when Documents & Data is the large number.
- Deleting projects without emptying CapCut Trash — the bytes often stay until Trash is cleared.
If the phone is still full after CapCut shrinks, next stops are usually Photos junk and large Camera videos: find large videos, delete screenshots, and what’s taking up space.
