You tap Download on a few long videos for a flight. Weeks later, Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube shows several gigabytes under Documents & Data. Photos looks fine. Messages looks fine. YouTube is the bar that will not move.
Those files are offline copies. They are not in Photos. Clearing watch history does not delete the download. This guide shows how to remove one video, clear Downloads, and stop Smart downloads from refilling the phone — without losing your Google account or Likes. Button names can vary by YouTube and iOS version; look for Library / You, Downloads, Remove download, and Download quality. Offline downloads usually need YouTube Premium (or YouTube’s current offline eligibility); the storage steps below still apply once the files are on the phone.
Where YouTube Offline Videos Actually Live
Downloaded videos and some caches sit in YouTube’s sandbox: Documents & Data. That is the same bucket Spotify, WhatsApp, and Safari files use — not the Photos bar and not App Size.
- App Size — the YouTube binary from the App Store. Usually modest compared with offline HD video.
- Documents & Data — offline videos, Smart downloads, caches, and local databases. Often the large number.
- Photos — unrelated unless you saved a clip to Camera Roll on purpose. Emptying Recently Deleted will not shrink YouTube.
For the two-number read on any app, see how to clear Documents & Data on iPhone. Music apps pile up the same way: delete Spotify downloads and delete Apple Music downloads.
Quick check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube. If Documents & Data is the big line, open YouTube → Library (or You) → Downloads and remove offline copies there. Offloading the app will not free that number.
How to Remove One Offline Video
- Open YouTube.
- Tap Library (or You) → Downloads.
- Find the video. Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Remove download (or Delete download — wording varies). Do not confuse this with Remove from Watch later / Unlike unless you also want that list change.
The video stays in history and on YouTube’s servers. Only the offline file leaves the phone. Recheck iPhone Storage after a minute if Documents & Data looks stale.
How to Clear All YouTube Downloads Faster
When you need a big win:
- Library / You → Downloads.
- Look for an Edit, trash, or Downloads settings control at the top of the list (labels change by version).
- Remove every offline video you no longer need, or use a clear-all style option if YouTube shows one.
- Open the gear / Downloads settings and turn off Smart downloads if you do not want YouTube to auto-fill space on Wi-Fi.
- Optional: lower Download quality so future offline videos cost less per hour.
Then open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → YouTube and confirm Documents & Data dropped. If the list still looks wrong, leave the screen and come back, or reboot once after a large clear.
Remove download
Deletes the offline file. History and Likes stay. Best everyday fix. Storage comes back without touching your Google account.
Clear watch history
Edits your account activity. Does not reliably delete offline files. Always Remove download (or clear Downloads) if storage is the goal.
Offload YouTube
Removes App Size only. Offline videos stay in Documents & Data. Poor choice when downloads are the problem. See offload vs delete.
Delete App
Wipes the binary and the sandbox, including offline files. Account stays in the cloud. Use only after you accept re-downloading anything you still want offline.
Stop Downloads From Coming Back
- Turn off Smart downloads if you only needed offline video once (travel week, commute batch).
- Download quality: 720p or lower saves a lot versus 1080p / higher when you keep a large offline library on purpose.
- Wi-Fi only: keep cellular download off so the phone does not fill on the go.
- Playlists: undownload travel or workout playlists when the trip is over — same habit as Spotify offline lists.
What Will Not Free YouTube Storage
- Emptying Photos Recently Deleted — different app. Use it when Photos is stuck; see empty Recently Deleted.
- Clearing Safari cache — does not touch YouTube’s sandbox. Clear cache on iPhone is still useful elsewhere.
- Deleting videos from history without Remove download — the offline file can remain.
- Offloading YouTube when Documents & Data is the large number.
If the phone is still full after video apps, next stops are usually Photos junk and large Camera videos: find large videos, free storage without deleting keepers, and what’s taking up space.
Where Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner Helps
Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner (App Store id 6748653777 — not Cleanup by Codeway, not CleanMyPhone by MacPaw) cannot delete YouTube downloads. iOS does not let third-party apps empty another app’s Documents & Data.
After you shrink YouTube, it helps on the Photos side of a full phone: duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, and oversized videos, scanned on-device. Photos never leave the phone. Deletions go to a 30-day undo vault.
- On-device Photos cleanup — duplicates, similar, screenshots, large videos.
- 30-day undo vault on everything the app deletes.
- Does not wipe YouTube / Spotify / Documents & Data — those stay in Settings and the apps that own them.
Start at cleanupmyphone.com when Photos is the next bar after offline video.
Clean Photos After You Clear YouTube Downloads
Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner finds duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, and oversized videos on your iPhone. On-device only. 30-day undo vault. It does not clear YouTube Downloads.

Does Remove download delete the video from my history?
No. It only deletes the offline file on the iPhone. History and Likes stay on your Google account, and you can download again later if offline is still available to you.
Why is YouTube still huge after I cleared history?
Clearing history is not the same as removing Downloads. Open Library / You → Downloads and remove what is left. Emptying Photos Recently Deleted will not help YouTube.
Does Offload Unused Apps remove YouTube downloads?
No. Offload keeps Documents & Data. Remove Downloads inside YouTube, or Delete App if you accept losing local offline files.
Can Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner delete YouTube downloads?
No. Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner cleans Photos on-device (duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, large videos) with a 30-day undo vault. It cannot empty YouTube’s sandbox. App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id6748653777. Not Cleanup by Codeway. Not CleanMyPhone by MacPaw.
