iPhone storage showing Spotify Documents and Data filled with offline music downloads

You download a few playlists for a flight. Months later, Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Spotify shows several gigabytes under Documents & Data. Your Camera Roll is fine. Podcasts are fine. Spotify is the bar that will not move.

Those files are offline copies. They are not in Photos. Removing a playlist from Your Library does not always delete the download. This guide shows how to remove one track, wipe a playlist, or clear Downloads so storage comes back — without losing your Spotify account or library. Button names can vary by Spotify and iOS version; look for Downloads, Remove Download, and Storage.

Where Spotify Downloads Actually Live

Offline songs, albums, podcasts, and audiobooks sit in Spotify’s sandbox: Documents & Data. That is the same bucket WhatsApp media and Safari files use — not the Photos bar and not App Size.

For the two-number read on any app, see how to clear Documents & Data on iPhone. If you use Apple Music instead (or as well), the parallel walkthrough is how to delete Apple Music downloads.

Quick check: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Spotify. If Documents & Data is the big line, open Spotify → Your Library → Downloads and remove offline copies there. Offloading the app will not free that number.

How to Remove One Song or Episode

  1. Open Spotify.
  2. Go to Your LibraryDownloads (or find the track in a downloaded playlist).
  3. Tap the three-dot menu on the song or episode.
  4. Choose Remove Download (not Remove from Playlist / Unlike, unless you also want it gone from the list).

The track stays in your library and on Spotify’s servers. Only the offline file leaves the phone. Recheck iPhone Storage after a minute if the Documents & Data number looks stale.

How to Undownload a Playlist or Album

  1. Open the playlist or album that shows a green download arrow.
  2. Tap the Download control to turn it off (arrow / toggle — wording varies).
  3. Wait for Spotify to finish removing the offline copies.
  4. Confirm under Your Library → Downloads that the playlist is gone from the offline list.

Liked Songs and Smart Shuffle playlists can auto-download if you turned that on earlier. After you free space, turn those toggles off or the gigabytes come back on Wi-Fi.

How to Clear All Spotify Downloads Faster

When you need a big win:

  1. Your Library → Downloads — work through each playlist, album, and podcast show and remove downloads.
  2. Spotify Settings (gear) → look for Storage, Storage and cellular, or Data Saver (labels change by version).
  3. Clear cached data if offered, and remove offline downloads you no longer need.
  4. Optional: turn off Download using cellular so you only fill space on Wi-Fi on purpose.

Then open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Spotify and confirm Documents & Data dropped. If the list still looks wrong, leave the screen and come back, or reboot once after a large clear.

Remove Download

Deletes the offline file. Library and Liked Songs stay. Best everyday fix. Storage comes back without touching your account.

Unlike / Remove from playlist

Edits your library lists. Does not always delete the offline file. Always Remove Download (or undownload the playlist) if storage is the goal.

Offload Spotify

Removes App Size only. Offline music stays in Documents & Data. Poor choice when downloads are the problem. See offload vs delete.

Delete App

Wipes the binary and the sandbox, including offline files. Account stays in the cloud. Use only after you accept re-downloading anything you still want offline.

What Will Not Free Spotify Storage

If the phone is full after music cleanup, next stops are usually Photos junk and large videos: free storage without deleting keepers and what’s taking up space.

Where Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner Helps

Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner (App Store id 6748653777 — not Cleanup by Codeway, not CleanMyPhone by MacPaw) cannot delete Spotify downloads. iOS does not let third-party apps empty another app’s Documents & Data.

After you shrink Spotify, it helps on the Photos side of a full phone: duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, and oversized videos, scanned on-device. Photos never leave the phone. Deletions go to a 30-day undo vault.

Start at cleanupmyphone.com when Photos is the next bar after offline music.

Clean Photos After You Clear Spotify Downloads

Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner finds duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, and oversized videos on your iPhone. On-device only. 30-day undo vault. It does not clear Spotify Downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Remove Download delete the song from my library?

No. It only deletes the offline file on the iPhone. The track stays in Your Library and you can download it again later.

Why is Spotify still huge after I deleted playlists?

Deleting a playlist is not the same as removing Downloads. Open Your Library → Downloads and undownload what is left. Emptying Photos Recently Deleted will not help Spotify.

Does Offload Unused Apps remove Spotify downloads?

No. Offload keeps Documents & Data. Remove Downloads inside Spotify, or Delete App if you accept losing local offline files.

Can Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner delete Spotify downloads?

No. Cleanup My Phone: AI Cleaner cleans Photos on-device (duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, large videos) with a 30-day undo vault. It cannot empty Spotify’s sandbox. App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id6748653777. Not Cleanup by Codeway. Not CleanMyPhone by MacPaw.
