The useful job is freeing storage and cleaning the camera roll, not finding an app with the highest star count. As of September 2026, do it in this order: use the Photos app’s own tools, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage if you already pay for iCloud and the phone is the thing that is full, offload unused apps if the space is apps rather than photos, and only then consider a dedicated cleaner — and only one that stays on the device and can undo a delete.

What are you trying to free?
A phone full of offline video downloads does not need a photo cleaner. A camera roll full of near-identical shots does not get fixed by offloading apps. Read the storage list first. Photos, a single app’s Documents & Data, and System Data are different problems with different fixes.

1. Built-in Photos tools
Start here. It is already on the phone, and it does not add a subscription.
- Duplicates. Photos → Albums → Utilities → Duplicates (iOS 16 and later) finds exact and near-exact copies. Merge and keep one. Shots that are merely similar — the same scene a second later — stay in the library. How to use the Duplicates album.
- Screenshots, bursts, and videos. Each has its own album or a Review Large Videos list under Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Photos. Clear the ones you do not need. Screenshots and large videos.
- Recently Deleted. Anything you remove stays about 30 days and still counts until you empty the album. Skip this and the storage bar barely moves. Empty Recently Deleted.
Photos will not compress a library of video in one pass, and it will not line up every similar shot for you. That is the gap a dedicated cleaner is for, after this pass.
2. Optimize iPhone Storage
This is the right step when the phone is full, you already pay for iCloud, and iCloud still has room for the whole library. Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → Optimize iPhone Storage. On iOS 18 and later the same choice is also under Settings → Apps → Photos.
Full-size originals stay in iCloud. The phone keeps smaller versions, and iOS switches them in when storage runs low. You do not choose which photos. It does not delete anything, and it does not free iCloud. If both the phone and iCloud are full, this setting has nowhere to put the originals. 3. Offload unused apps
Offload is an app tool, not a camera-roll tool. Settings → General → iPhone Storage → the app → Offload App removes the app and keeps Documents & Data. The icon stays, with a cloud badge, and a later tap reinstalls over the same data. Automatic offload is Settings → Apps → App Store → Offload Unused Apps.
If Documents & Data is the large number — offline downloads, chats, voice memos — offloading frees almost nothing. Delete those files inside the app, or delete the app only if you can lose that local data. Offload versus delete.
4. Dedicated cleaner apps
Use one when Photos’ Duplicates album is not enough: lots of similar shots, or large videos you would rather shrink than delete. The App Store has many of these apps. They are not interchangeable. Before you install any of them, check three things on the App Store page: photo work happens on the device, deletes can be undone, and App Privacy does not list data used to track you.
