Charged by an iPhone Cleaner App? Cancel It and Ask for a Refund

You tried a storage cleaner app, the "3-day free trial" ended, and now there's an Apple charge on your card you didn't plan for. Maybe you already deleted the app. Here is the short answer: deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. It lives on your Apple Account and keeps renewing. Cancel it in Settings > your name > Subscriptions, then ask Apple for your money back at reportaproblem.apple.com. Both take about two minutes, and the steps are below.

Full disclosure: we make Phone Diet, which is also an iPhone cleaner with a subscription. The steps here work for any App Store app, ours included, and there's a section near the end on cancelling Phone Diet specifically.

1. Work out which app charged you

The line on your bank or card statement usually just says apple.com/bill, not the app's name. Apple uses that label for app purchases and for every subscription renewal, and it notes that several purchases can be grouped onto one charge. To see what it was:

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. Look through your purchase history for the date and amount. Tap the date to see the full receipt, including tax.
  3. If you use Family Sharing, switch to a family member from the Apple Account menu to see their purchases too.

No match? Search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" and check which Apple Account is printed on the receipt. Old accounts and a child's account on your card are the usual surprises. That's straight from Apple's guide, If you see "apple.com/bill" on your billing statement.

2. Cancel the subscription so it doesn't renew again

Do this before you ask for a refund, so next week's or next month's charge doesn't land while you wait.

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the cleaner app.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down to find it.

If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled. If the app isn't in the list at all, it's on another Apple Account (see step 1), and that account has to cancel it. Apple says you can't cancel a family member's subscription for them. Not near your iPhone? You can also cancel by signing in at account.apple.com. Source: Apple's Cancel a subscription from Apple.

Tip: Weekly plans are common with cleaner apps, so a forgotten trial can cost you every seven days, not once a month. Check the renewal line under the app's name in Subscriptions. It shows how often you're billed and the next date.

3. Ask Apple for a refund

App developers can't issue App Store refunds. Only Apple can, so the request goes to Apple:

  1. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  2. Tap I'd like to, then choose Request a refund.
  3. Choose the reason that fits, for example that you didn't mean to subscribe or the trial renewed before you cancelled, then continue.
  4. Select the subscription charge and tap Submit.

Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. If it's approved, the money can take longer to reach your card. Two things will stop you: a charge that's still pending can't be refunded yet (wait for the emailed receipt), and you have to pay any unpaid order first. Approval isn't guaranteed. Apple reviews each request, so be specific and honest about what happened. Source: Apple's Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple.

If the charge doesn't match anything on reportaproblem.apple.com or in your receipts, contact Apple Support. If you think your card was used without permission, call your card issuer too.

Still in the free trial? Cancel now, not on the last day

Apple's cutoff is at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Cancel later than that and the first charge may already be on its way. With most App Store apps you keep using the trial until its end date after cancelling, but some services end access straight away. Either way, cancelling early costs you nothing.

Don't count on the app to remind you. Plenty don't send a "your trial ends tomorrow" notice, and Phone Diet doesn't send notifications at all. If you start a trial, add a Reminder or a calendar alert for two days before it ends while the sign-up screen is still open.

How to avoid this with the next app

If the app was Phone Diet

Same rules: deleting Phone Diet, or deleting your data inside it, doesn't stop billing. To cancel, open Phone Diet's Settings and tap your plan card. A one-time offer may appear first (a discounted next year on Annual, or half price on a month of Monthly). Take it or tap Continue to Manage Subscription, which opens Apple's cancel screen. The Settings > your name > Subscriptions route above works too. You keep Premium until the end of the period you've paid for, and the app shows the date access ends.

We can't refund App Store charges ourselves. Use reportaproblem.apple.com as above, and if Apple approves it, Premium is removed from the app automatically.

Who Phone Diet is not for: if you need to free a few gigabytes once, you probably don't need a subscription at all. Scanning and reviewing what it finds are free in Phone Diet, and so is your first cleanup of up to 1 GB. That's enough to see if it's worth paying for, and for some people it's enough, full stop.

Quick answers

Does deleting a cleaner app cancel its subscription?

No. Cancel it in Settings > your name > Subscriptions. The app can be deleted or not, it makes no difference to billing.

Will Apple refund a subscription I forgot to cancel?

You can ask at reportaproblem.apple.com, and Apple reviews each request. Cancel first, so another renewal doesn't arrive while you wait.

Why can't I find the subscription in Settings?

It's probably on another Apple Account or a family member's. Check the account named on the emailed Apple receipt. No Apple receipt at all means it wasn't billed through the App Store.

See what a cleaner finds before you pay anything

Phone Diet scans photos, videos, email, contacts and calendars and shows you the results for free, and your first cleanup of up to 1 GB is free too. Premium is only needed after that.
